Umbrella’s work has been recognised as promoting dignity and respect. As a champion for dignity in care, we ensure that people who access our services have a great experience for all aspects of their support needs.
Umbrella promotes choice and independence by ensuring the young adults we support are fully involved in planning their daily activities, offering a personalised service that develops individuals skills and independence. Some examples of how we have achieved this are:
- We enjoy keeping fit and healthy but not everyone likes the gym! Young adults might choose a specialist dance class, an adaptive cycle session or a nature walk on a sunny day! Whatever it is we like to get moving!
- Staying safe when out and about in the community is really important to the young adults we support. It helps with their confidence by knowing who they can talk to or what to do if they need help. They have a fabulous time with the local police officers when they visit learning about different ways to keep safe…and trying out what’s its like to wear the uniform too
- Umbrella have supported a young man who had a fear of dogs. He loves going out in the community but coming across a dog would be quite frightening for him. To help with this we introduced him to pet therapy. Umbrella have a lovely volunteer who visits with their specially trained therapy dog. They worked with the young man slowly introducing him to playing fetch, grooming and taking walks together with Trafford the dog. The young man is now more confident around dogs and this has helped him when he is out and about. He now even has a pet dog at home!
- Being part of the local community is really important. We attended the grand opening of the new local Co-Op shop. We make regular visits to buy ingredients to make our lunches at Umbrella. We research recipes, create shopping list and manage our money to buy groceries.
We are proud of all our staff who work so hard to provide a high quality service and are so proud of all the families we support and how the young people we support have grown during their time with us.
