40 Stories for 40 Years | Growing Together: Karis’ Story

As part of our 40 Stories for 40 Years campaign, we’re sharing 40 individual stories that reflect the journey, people, and moments that have shaped Umbrella since 1985. Each story highlights a different voice from within our organisation, celebrating the impact we’ve made together over four decades.

Growing Together: Karis’ Story

Hi, I’m Karis, and I’ve been part of Umbrella for nearly 14 years.

My journey started as a volunteer, before quickly becoming an Activity Support Worker. From there, I progressed into a Lead Activity Support Worker role, later moving into the office as a Children’s Services Coordinator’s Assistant. And Today, I’m part of the Family Support Team.

Over the years, I’ve seen Umbrella grow in so many ways – but at its core, it still holds the same values.

Growing and Evolving

When I first started, adult services were small, and much of our work focused on children’s trips and group activities. Since then, services have expanded significantly. There’s now a greater focus on one-to-one support, and the Family Support Team has grown massively.

Despite all these changes, the heart of Umbrella hasn’t shifted. It’s still about supporting families, creating opportunities and making a lasting difference.

More Than Moments

It’s hard to pinpoint just one standout memory from my time here.

What stays with me most is the journey of the young people I’ve supported. Watching them grow from young children into independent teenagers and young adults is something truly special. It’s not about one day or one moment – it’s about being part of their lives over time and seeing that progress unfold.

A Role That Changed Me

When I first joined Umbrella, I hadn’t imagined working with children and young people long-term.

But over the years, that’s completely changed. I can’t imagine doing anything else now. This role has shaped how I see the world and helped me grow as a person. In many ways, I’ve grown alongside Umbrella itself.

One Word: Empowering

If I had to describe Umbrella in one word, it would be empowering.

I started at the Tuesday Youth Club as a volunteer – and I’m still there today. It’s incredible to see young people join at 11 and leave at 19, ready to take their next steps.

Some go on to university, others into jobs they love and some even choose careers similar to this, inspired by their experiences. Being part of that journey is something I’ll never take for granted.

Building Lasting Connections

One of the most rewarding parts of my role has been working with families over long periods of time.

It’s rare to support the same family for over 10 years, but I’ve been lucky enough to do just that. From picking children up from infant school and going to soft play, to supporting them as teenagers developing independence and life skills – it’s an incredible journey to be part of.

Seeing them go on to jobs, driving lessons, and adulthood is so rewarding. Over time, these families become part of your life too, which makes the work even more meaningful.

Looking to the Future

As Umbrella continues to grow, I hope we can keep reaching more families and providing the support they need.

The impact this organisation has is so important, and it’s vital that we continue to expand so even more people can benefit from what Umbrella offers.

Karis’ story reflects what Umbrella is all about—growth, connection, and empowering young people and families every step of the way.
